PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health condition that can develop in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life, making it difficult to function in everyday situations. The symptoms of PTSD can range from mild to severe, and early diagnosis and treatment are essential for successful recovery.

To help individuals determine their level of PTSD, the online PTSD calculator is a tool that uses a series of questions to determine an individual’s level of PTSD. These questions are based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals.

The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) below is a widely used assessment tool for the diagnosis and evaluation of PTSD symptoms. It was developed by the National Center for PTSD and is based on the diagnostic criteria for PTSD outlined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

The PCL-5 is a self-report questionnaire that consists of 20 items, each representing a symptom of PTSD. Individuals who have experienced a traumatic event are asked to rate how much they have been bothered by each symptom over the past month, using a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 0 (not at all) to 4 (extremely).

The PCL-5 assesses four symptom clusters of PTSD, including intrusion, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, and hyperarousal. It also includes a total score that reflects the severity of PTSD symptoms.

It is important to note that while the PCL-5 can be a useful tool, it should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosing PTSD. A comprehensive clinical evaluation by a trained mental health professional is necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
